SketchUp model of the perfect desk

Posted in English by Gorm on 01/03 -09

I recently gained quite a few skillpoints in Google SketchUp by watching almost all of their excellent video tutorials. I didn’t expect much when I first started, but found the program to be both easy and quite powerful. Learning this was almost as much fun as learning to juggle, and a lot more useful. I heartily recommend everyone to try it out. The free version has all you need, and it’s free. Download here.

I wanted to make a model to show off with, and the first thing that came to mind was a desk. I dream of a perfect desk. And this is how I picture it (I made everything but the columns, which were imported from the 3D Warehouse):

Hahaha, those were some pompous legs on that desk! Did you actually draw the book and the mouse and everything? Looks like a good desk.

My desk will be a temple!

Modeling is a lot easier than drawing. For instance, one can draw just a 2d shape and “push” it into 3d, like demonstrated in this video. There are other, even more impressive tricks as well. I’m particularly fond of the follow me tool.

Nice. However, you seem to have missed the importance of swiveling. The back of the chair will swing around and hit the flat end of the desk, preventing you from swiveling more than 45 degrees to either side.
